Honestly I think they're tied. For personal reading I'd say fiction because it creates a love of reading, but for school or research nonfiction is definitely more efficient. I personally prefer fiction books.

Personally, I prefer both. It depends on the book. Historical fiction is my favorite at the moment because most normal fiction books I've read are pretty weird. Nonfiction books are great for school and research, but pleasure reading? They can get a little boring. Nonfiction and fiction books are good, as long as you know how to balance the two. Too much fiction probably isn't the best, but it's always fun to read about magic or things that are different from what we consider 'normal'.

I don't necessarily prefer non-fiction...but I do find I'm reading more of it as I get older. Generally, I read about 120 books a year and about 1/3 of those are non-fiction -- but last year, I was closer to 40%.I find I learn as much from fiction as from non-fiction, and that both can be equally entertaining. I am a member of a non-fiction book club, and a second book club that reads mostly non-fiction.

A middle schooler should definitely opt into fictional reads. From my general point of experience of being a student in jr. high, I mostly read fantasy and romance novels because they helped a lot (suprisingly) in english class. Even though we wrote more fact base reports and essays, knowlege from my fictional readings supported the flow and color of my papers. Creativity and uniqueness are somethings that are missing nowadays on students work that they all put forth, and fictional books are a remedy for that situation! :)

Fiction because it is more interesting, and in middle school you write more book reports than you write non-fiction essays.
