In this fast-paced story of a giant boy named Luc, the reader is brought to the setting of the more sleazy side of Manhattan. Luc is from Quebec, and his English is limited. Luc is forced to box in a local pub by his caretaker, Mr. Chilton. When Luc encounters two men who are exploiting an unusual animal, he begins to question whether Mr. Chilton is really after his best interest. Luc must decide whether to continue his miserable boxing matches or take a stand for himself and the creature.

Opinion:

The Giant  by Jonathan Mary-Todd was an inspiring book overall, with extremely lifelike settings and dialogue. Some of the events were a little bit unrealistic, but they added to the adventurous nature of the book. Luc's journey was full of relatable emotions and endearing struggles, It seemed unlikely that he could be below the radar of all authorites as the story portrays him, and his background information is rather vague. However, I was immediately transported into his world and fully absorbed in his situation. I would recommend this book for mature young readers looking for a fast-paced adventure story.

Content Rating:

Content rating - some mature content

Explain your content rating:

There is a lot of violence in this book, as it centers around boxing. The settings for parts of the book promote alcohol, and cursing is mentioned, although actual curses are not used in the book. This would be appropriate for mature young readers.
