The Ghost Keys, islands located around the Bermuda Triangle, are mysterious and a bit crazy for Rain. She's a thirteen year-old girl with two best friends, Charlie and Miranda. Rain's family owns an inn, where many tourists stay. A new family arrives with three children: Wendy, John, and Michael. However, the little kids are brats. When Rain is asked to babysit, she takes them along with her friends to the beach. There they meet a manatee and six dolphins. Under the manatee skin is a beautiful woman named Aycayia. Aycayia was one of the first people along with her six sisters. A long time ago, Aycayia had a son known as the mosquito boy. He was also the first murderer. The first witch turned the whole village on Aycayia, and she was banned from the land, and her six sisters followed her. Aycayia takes the three children as if they were her own. Now Rain has to find the lost children and her zemis. (Zemis are ancestral spirits) Rain has one zemi, which is the searcher and the healer. Therefore, Rain is the searcher and the healer. Although she has one, she has eight more to find. It's not that easy, especially with her enemy Callahan looking for the zemis too.
Opinion:
"Spirits of Ash and Foam" was interesting, adventurous, and obscure. However, I was not intrigued by the book. There were too many things happening at one time. I got lost in the many different chapters, which made the book confusing. One chapter would be about Rain and her friends, the next about Callahan and detectives. I suggest "Spirits of Ash and Foam" to readers who love adventure and mystical fantasies, but not daunted by complicated story lines.
